It would certainly be helpful because I bet there are things statisticians know that I do not. IIRC, at stanford, there was the ML course, and then the statistics course that covers very similar topics but no programming component. I seem to remember the numerical analysis class I took in school had similarly interesting concepts but without an emphasis on building things.
